Women in the trades tend to be self-employed at slightly lower rates than men, though this varies from sector to sector. This cannot be due to women simply being younger than men on average since the opposite is true in most sectors. This may be due to lower levels of experience among women or it may point to particular difficulties for women in progressing to self-employment in the trades.
